Family Services and ChildFIRST

MASP provides family services in partnership with the Department of Human Services and a range of other providers across the Mallee region. These providers include:

Centacare
Mallee Family Care
St Lukes Anglicare
Murray Valley Aboriginal Co-operative
Mildura Aboriginal Corporation, and
Mallee Track Health and Community Service
Swan Hill Aboriginal Services

These providers have come together to form the Mallee Child Youth & Family Services Alliance (MCYFSA) so that the provision of family services across the area is much more co-ordinated, efficient and effective.

The Mallee region is made up of the four local government areas of Mildura, Swan Hill, Gannawarra and Buloke.

Child and Family Information, Referral and Support Teams (ChildFIRST) – To facilitate access to Family Services, ChildFIRST teams have been established in designated sub-regional catchments across Victoria to provide a community based referral point into Family Services.

For some families, knowing how and where to access the service system is challenging. Professionals may also have difficulty navigating the service system to refer children, young people and families to an appropriate service that will meet their needs.

MASP is the ChildFIRST provider in the Mallee catchment and does so on behalf of the Mallee Child Youth & Family Services Alliance.

The primary purpose of Child FIRST is to ensure that vulnerable children, young people and their families are linked effectively into relevant services.

A referral to Child FIRST may be the best way of connecting children, young people and their families to the services they need, where families exhibit any of the following factors that may affect a child’s safety, stability or development:

- significant parenting problems that may be affecting the child’s development
- serious family conflict, including family breakdown
- families under pressure due to a family member’s physical or mental illness, substance abuse, disability or bereavement
- young, isolated and/or unsupported families
- significant social or economic disadvantage that may adversely impact on a child’s care or development.

ChildFIRST is staffed by experienced practitioners with particular skills in assessing the needs of vulnerable children, young people and families.
